February 2006 After 25 years in the simulation industry and an upbeat presence at ITEC Primary Image closed its doors just a few months later in September. A team of core engineers refused to be put down by the unfortunate events suffered by Primary Image and formed a company, aptly named XPI Simulation, to continue developing Primary Image products. The company is employee owned and committed to supplying what simulation customers want: top quality, low price, reliable equipment and excellent service.

Alan Davenport (ex-M.D of Primary Image) has taken a role as part-time Chairman with Dave Fulker and Simon Skinner bringing a wealth of simulation experience and technical know-how taking the lead roles as executive directors. XPI purchased the rights to Fabriano to continue supporting key customers and fulfilling the niche markets that PCs still can’t reach. It also purchased, the IPR to key products such as the Marshalling simulator and the Driving Sim. Most importantly it acquired the rights to Tempest, its powerful software API, which enables them to develop new products very quickly without the limitations often found in other simulation software.

Davenport said, “company ownership brings out the drive and determination of people involved. Being part of the decision making process really focuses the mind on the importance of good customer service and everyone is totally committed to the success of the company. The team is one of the best in the industry with a good understanding of market needs so I’m confident it will go from strength to strength”.

XPI has done well to get a full order book in a short period of time. Current contracts cover a wide range of prestigious projects from Concorde flight simulation to intelligent traffic behaviour for car driving. There is no doubt that XPI engineers have a good reputation in training and simulation so we can be sure to hear much more of them in the future.
