Together with our partners at Brooklands Museum and the University
of Surrey the goal was to demonstrate the effects of improved
aerodynamic design of racing cars through the century. And what
better place to experience the effects than the famous banked
circuit at Brooklands?
Using photographs, films and engineering data from Brooklands’ historic
archives XPI reconstructed a realistic visual model of the circuit
as it was in the glory days of the 1930s. Add that to the dynamic
model including the effects of engine power, down-force, drag
and friction to get a sense of just what is was like to drive
the Brooklands circuit.
The University of Surrey is continuing to research the aerodynamics
and performance of the early cars such that the simulation can
be extended as more data becomes available.
The same team is also in the process of rebuilding the Concorde
flight simulator to be unveiled later this year.
