XPI’s latest release of the application programmer’s software, Tempest, includes an option to support volumetric clouds. This extension enables the user to create realistic looking cumulus cloud formations or localized ground fog with very fast update rates for interactive simulators.

The volumetric clouds feature extends Tempest’s environmental effects module which currently includes flat cloud layers such as cirrus and stratus, an ephemeris model and weather effects such as rain and snow. Now, an unlimited number of cloud layers can be created, including a superficial cloud and transition or “scud” layer to give depth and realism. These features are particularly useful in flight simulation where challenging cloud scenarios can be used in training.

Each volumetric cloud layer is generated procedurally and is affected by wind and lighting. The volumetric cloud layers blend seamlessly with existing scenery and lighting systems and, unlike many existing implementations, can extend over very large distances.
