Many
weapons systems operate from a stationary platform, and therefore
have a 2D view of the world. With this in mind, XPI Simulation has recently developed its PT-FX technology to run on
its Fabriano XL range. PT-FX
is a technology designed by XPI Simulation to provide low cost
PC-based 360º photographic panning backgrounds for simulators.
As the background is photographic, the realism achieved is unsurpassed.
PT-FX is ideal for fixed-view point training where ultimate
realism is crucial.
An example of the capabilities of PT-FX is shown below.
Within the scene 3 per pixel omni directional lights are simulating flare effects,
running at 1280 x 1024 resolution at 60Hz.

PT-FX
technology
exploits the realism that can be achieved from photographic
processes and combines this with the flexibility of 3D textured
targets, which interact with the high resolution photographic
background scene.
PT-FX
technology runs on Fabriano which means that customers can benefit
from the realism a photographic background can give, as well
as the outstanding image quality and special effects offered
by the image generator and Tempest, the software behind PT-FX.
Weather
effects such as snow, rain and fog can easily be adjusted in
the simulation. Thanks to the latest advances in Tempest, PT-FX
customers can now also benefit from advanced lighting effects,
flares, smoke and explosion effects which further enhance the
realism.
This
low-cost scaleable system also supports multiple display channels,
significantly enhancing the level of realism for training applications.
Using PT-FX technology enables
the customer to pan around 360°, which is ideally suited for
fixed viewpoint training applications such as:
- Shoulder
launch missile training
- Artillery
forward observation training
- Air
traffic control tower training
- Small
arms trainers
